"Music as Medicine for Your Brain" is a result of a 3-year study as part of the African Diaspora Spiritual's for the 21st Century Project in the department of music at California State University Dominguez Hills. The award-winning theory produced by this study will be discussed, including how music impacts the brain, the impact of spirituals, and the impact of the ring shout. The audience will have the opportunity to participate in an experience of the ring shout at the end of the talk.
“Imagine that you’re in the center of a group of people singing spiritual songs from their hearts to yours with the intention of causing your healing…That’s why the Ring Shout is such a powerful experience.”

First, participants will learn about the music, lyrics, and movement, and the impact on brain and body. Then each person will participate in the powerful experience of being at the center of the Ring Shout Circle. (Note: The Ring Shout does not actually consist of any shouting. Only singing and movement.)

The Ring Shout is a powerful and moving group process that was developed by slaves in the Antebellum South to heal each other emotionally, physically, and spiritually in group ceremony after the brutal oppression of their lives. The songs for this workshop are known as “Negro Spirituals” and the combination of this type of music and dance was used to inspire and support the recipient and participants during these difficult times.

Award winning research and a large body of anecdotal evidence suggests that this process has a powerful impact on the mind, body and spirit of the recipient. The Music and Movement of the Ring Shout gives you an opportunity to experience a new level of connection to the past, freedom in the present, and an enhanced ability to create your future. Join us for a beautiful and powerful experience with lasting effects.
